Thank you for your interest in using the Evidence-based practice Knowledge Assessment in Nursing (EKAN) instrument. You may use the EKAN, a copyrighted product by Darrell R. Spurlock Jr. PhD, RN, NEA-BC, ANEF and Amy H. Wonder, PhD, RN after agreeing to the following conditions:
The EKAN may be used for non-commercial educational or research purposes only.
The EKAN may not be modified without prior permission from one of the EKAN authors. Unacceptable modifications include:
Changing the written instructions atop the form
Changing the order of the items
Changing the numbering of the items
Changing the order of the item answer options (
of any item or item answer option
No part of the EKAN instrument form or the scoring key may be reproduced in part or in whole without the express permission of the EKAN authors. This restriction includes reproduction of EKAN items or answers in journal articles, book chapters, on audiovisual slides at conferences, or via any other form of publication.
Examinees may not be charged to take the EKAN.
If the EKAN is to be administered electronically, the following conditions are met:
The EKAN was designed as an objective knowledge measure. To maintain security over the items and to support continued validity,
the EKAN may not be distributed electronically for examinees to take outside a secure, face-to-face testing environment. This restriction includes the remote use of “secure testing browsers” at this time.
The EKAN form is re-created on the screen as it appears on paper. Page breaks in the online form should reflect those in the paper form.
Once examinees have submitted/completed the form, they cannot re-enter and change their answers.
Electronic administrations of the EKAN should be password protected whenever possible.
Access to the electronic form must be disabled immediately after administration sessions.
We encourage the use of commercially available survey software such as Qualtrics® for administering the EKAN. Under certain circumstances, we may be able provide individualized access to a study-specific Qualtrics® web portal where examinees can complete the EKAN (and demographic items). Raw data will then be provided back to the PI. Please contact Dr. Spurlock (
) to discuss this option.
The scoring key must be kept separately from the exam form at all times and secured on a password-protected computer.
The scoring key must not be transmitted, transferred, or shared in any form (verbally, electronically, or on paper) with anyone outside the research team headed by the Principal Investigator (PI) who has signed this form.
Establishing robust validity, reliability and normative scoring information about new measures is essential to advancing the science of nursing education. Thus, EKAN users agree to share de-identified EKAN data with the EKAN authors within 180 days of administration of the EKAN. These data will be added to an aggregate database for the purpose of further validating and refining the EKAN (e.g., updating norms, assessing cross-national equivalence, etc.). EKAN users agree to provide the following:
For each use of the EKAN, a brief narrative description of the study purpose, design, participants, dates of data collection, primary language of examinees, and study setting (including City/State/Country).
For each use of the EKAN, the raw item responses and responses to demographic items, minimally age, gender, and primary language. Model demographic items are available from the EKAN authors.
Please send the raw data file in SPSS, Microsoft Excel, or CSV format to
. Please include a key for coding categorical variables (gender, language, etc.).
Please utilize the following citation for the initial validity and reliability study for the EKAN:
